Because we have such a large variety of retailers, we have decided to launch a “5 Minutes with…” series, where we profile store managers and employees, to learn more about them and their business.
This week we sat down with Betty from Ruffage.
Betty, tell us about Ruffage. How long have you been operating?
Ruffage is a healthy alternative to eating, with fresh sandwiches, salads, fruit and freshly squeezed juices. Ruffage has been operating for 30 years since The Hyperdome’s opening, however I have been running it for 13 years now.
Where do you source your fresh produce from?
Our goods are sourced locally from around Australia. In particular, we purchase our chickens from the local chicken shop in The Hyperdome, and we love to support local businesses in Canberra too when we can.
What does the Ruffage brand pride itself on? What makes it different to other cafe’s and sandwich/salad retailers?
The fact that we sell fresh food that is cooked and made on the premises daily.
We pride ourselves on providing our customers with only the best quality and freshest product available, and also providing them healthy alternatives.
What aspect of running a small business do you enjoy the most?
My customers. We have a lot of elderly customers who are regulars at our store, and because I have a background in aged care and disability, I pride myself on the fact that we give them fantastic service and look after them.
All of our regular customers we have, we know them well and they get to know us personally too. We know most of our regular customers by name too!
What does a day in your life operating Ruffage look like?
I get a lot of enjoyment out of running and operating Ruffage. I love working in The Hyperdome, and working and interacting with my staff and my customers. Our team at Ruffage is more like a family, we try and get a long with each other and joke with one another. I care about my staff a lot.
My husband and I are normally at the store around 5.30/6am each morning, and leave around 4.45pm, so we are there all day long. Mainly because there is a lot of prep to do in the kitchen! The staff members arrive around 9am, and take it from there. I also work out the front at times as well.
What are three things people may not know about Ruffage?
I wouldn’t say that there is much that would surprise people about our store, but one main thing is probably just how much care we take with people, and the attitude we have with them.
We are also very passionate about healthy food and eating, we know it may be a little more expensive then your greasy, unhealthy options – but in the long run it is going to benefit you.
In your opinion, what is the secret to operating a successful franchise business?
Having an interaction with your customers and your staff, most importantly.
